this kinda reminds me of Iola Leroy by by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, at least the part about how confusing it was to be biracial in that time. This was also a very informative and moving piece so thank you for posting.
I mentioned this in another comment but today Walter would’ve almost certainly been considered white. His lineage was like 1/36 black. And they probably would’ve labeled him as an ally or an imposter.
Either way, I love his story because he provided such valuable insight into lynchings that it doesn’t really matter.
